ODEI TODAY | Fall 2024: A Message from Vice Provost Tabbye Chavous

As we reflect on the past year, including the outcomes of our recent national and local elections, what may be salient to many of us is the importance of our democracy and the collective voices that can shape our future. Undoubtedly, the election outcomes and speculation around the implications for higher education and society have stirred different responses, emotions and thoughts within and across our campus community, and beyond.

It is in these moments that we are called to reflect on ways to move forward together. The importance of the work we do—building a more just and inclusive campus and society—does not depend on any single election. In fact, these times can remind us why we must continue with an even greater purpose.

Now more than ever, it is essential that we stay focused on bridging divides, ensuring that all campus community members are included, valued and respected while continuing to dismantle systemic barriers to equitable access and success.

While there may be some uncertainties on the road ahead of us, we must continue to look for and leverage opportunities for learning, growth and collaboration. At U-M, we can be prepared – through knowledge, evidence, skills and compassion – to meet opportunities and challenges with action and resilience, knowing that meaningful positive change comes from our sustained efforts and persistence.

As we look ahead, our institutional core values – diversity, equity, inclusion, innovation, integrity and respect – remain as vital as ever. The strength of our community lies in our collective commitment to these values, along with knowledge and effort – all made possible through the rich diversity in perspectives that each individual brings to our community. Each of us plays a crucial role in advancing these values, and together we can continue to forge new paths, make progress, and create meaningful change in the days ahead of us.

Thank you all for being leaders in our community and for the ways you support one another. This issue of ODEI Today highlights just a few examples of how our collective efforts have made a meaningful difference.

Sincerely,

Tabbye Chavous
Vice Provost for Equity & Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer
Professor of Education and Psychology
