BACKGROUND

The Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) Summit is held annually in October to celebrate the progress of U-M’s Five-Year DEI Strategic Plan and to encourage ongoing efforts. An estimated 1,200 students, faculty, and staff attended the Community Assembly & Discussion on October 7, 2019 at Hill Auditorium, featuring keynote speaker Van Jones, a panel discussion, and student performance. There was also a Meet & Greet Reception with Van Jones immediately following the Community Assembly & Discussion. Centrally-sponsored events were held throughout the month, hosted by various campus partners. Brief descriptions and photos from these events, along with a recording of the Community Assembly & Discussion, are available here.

CURRENT YEAR

This year the annual DEI Summit will occur in October 2020; date and time for the Community Assembly & Discussion is TBD. One of the major considerations affecting our planning process is that U-M is hosting a Presidential Debate on Thursday, October 15, posing unique advantages and challenges for us.

DESCRIPTION

The purpose of the Student Advisory Planning Group (SAPG) is to draw student attendance to the DEI Summit 2020: Community Assembly & Discussion by providing critical input, feedback, and assistance with program content, student engagement, and marketing strategies. Our goal is for the Community Assembly & Discussion to reflect students’ interests and experiences, as well as our institutional DEI mission, and inspire and motivate the campus community to continue its progress toward DEI.
SAPG members will attend 6 monthly meetings in February, March, April, September, October, and November. We may also meet between May-August based on members’ availability and interest. Each meeting will be 2 hours in length and will include dinner. Meetings will be facilitated by Dr. Mary Rose, Program Manager ([email protected]), and Tyne Lucas, Executive Assistant to the Deputy CDO ([email protected].), in the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Provost’s Office. Approximately 15-20 students will be selected to participate. The contributions of these members will be publicly acknowledged at the 2020 DEI Summit’s Community Assembly and on the ODEI website.
